Cory Lynn Caulfield grew up in the Virginia Piedmont and considers herself blessed to continue to call that her home. The natural beauty of this region has always been a strong source of inspiration both in her art and life. This rural environment grounds her interest in botanicals, landscapes and subjects from the natural world.
At an early age it was clear to Cory that she would pursue a career in fine art. Having sold her first painting at age sixteen, she had already begun to examine the life she finds so fascinating in the details of the natural world. Although she is largely self-taught, Cory has studied privately with artists in the United States, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. Much of her inspiration and self-study has been focused in two areas, American watercolorists such as Winslow Homer and the Dutch and Flemish painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Specifically, the life like detail and the deep philosophical issues they raise about art and its relationship to nature and life. She endeavors to depict her subjects in fine detail while bringing vitality to the work.
Cory has devoted most of her career to watercolors while continuing to work in a range of mediums including oils, pen and ink, graphite and pastel. Having been well recognized for her botanical watercolors, she has recently returned to oils. She continues to enjoy botanical subjects along with landscapes inspired by her local surroundings and travels.
Much of Ms. Caulfield’s art is privately commissioned. She has been represented by galleries in Washington DC., New York, Miami, Stockholm, Copenhagen and other cities. She has also been selected for several public art projects, most recently in Washington D.C. and Ocean City, MD.
In January 2007 she opened Caulfield Gallery in Washington, VA where she shows her art as well as many other noted artists from Virginia and around the world.
